2013 May & 2014 April, Extremadura, Spain
In May of 2013 we visited Extremadura in Spain, we flew into Madrid and was met by our guide ~ Ian Parsons of Griffon Holidays ~ we drove for approx. 3.5hrs to Alcantara in the Caceres Region. Alcantara was to be our base and we were booked into the local hotel. Alcantara was a lovely town with a Roman Stonearch Bridge across the River Tagus. The hotel was fabulous, the bar area was used by the locals of the town and it had a great atmosphere. We visited Monfrague National Parc, the Wetlands of Saucedilla, marvelled at the Sierra de Gredos Mountains with the snowy peak of Almanzor. We wandered through the wild flower meadows, scented with wild Thyme, Lavender and Garlic, and visited the Plains North of Trujillo and the Caceres Steppes. We also stood on the bridge that took you over from Spain to Portugal. We loved the place so much we returned in April 2014. The birds, people and scenery were amazing.
