2018 December Feurteventura
Bill and I decided to spend Christmas 2018 on a birding trip with our birding buddy Paul. We flew from Gatwick to Feurteventura, Canary Islands, this was our first visit to The Canaries. We hired a car and went in search of the Houbara Bustard. We also hired a guide, Derek Bradbury, for one day and he drove us across the Tindaya Plain, it was a dry, flat landscape with mountains in the distance, very scenic and sure enough we did see one Bustard, way off in the distance and in the heat haze, but it was the main bird we came to see, we saw many other great species during our stay on this island, including Berthelot's Pipit, Laughing Dove, Stonecurlew, Hoopoe, Spectacled Warbler, Southern Grey Shrike and the African species of Raven. I found Feurteventura to be a very pretty island, despite it's lack of greenery, it had a charm of it's own and reminded me very much of our trip to Morocco a few years ago.
We stayed on Feurteventura for Christmas 19th to 27th December 2018, and then we flew with Binter Airways in one of their 80 seater prop planes to Tenerife for New Year.
